Hello All,
As you may or may not know Ian Wade-Parker has stepped down as President for the 10/11 season and I have been voted in. Ian continues to be a member of the committee and I welcome his continued involvement with the Hawks.
At first I was hesitant to fill the shoes of the leaders of past committees of the Hawks. They have done a fantastic job rebuilding the club. Now I have had a chance to work closely with this year’s focused committee I am confident the club is on the correct track for the right growth and thus success.
I believe we are making great progress by recruiting a new coach who will be able to deliver what we have been missing from previous seasons. Organisation, positive feedback and clear goals for our playing group are some of the areas that will be addressed. I know a lot of you within our playing group have identified these areas which has been hurting us on and off the field.
Our new coach John White, comes to us for the Mudgeeraba Cricket Club where he has been involved with their successful grades and coaching for many years. He has many years’ experience as a player and captain, having played senior cricket for the past 27 years. John has also played Dolphins QCA and to a high standard in England and is employed as a school teacher. In talks with John he has many great ideas in the ways that we can implement organised and structured training sessions. Under Johns leadership, we will be appointing a Batting Coach and Bowling coach who will spend more time with one on one player development. We will also appoint a net captain each training night to ensure batting drills are under taken and net time rotation is well organised. At training from now on, each and every one will be driven towards a purpose of improving his skills and working as a positive group. Pre season practice matches have been organised for all teams and the dates, times and venues will be announced soon.
Our more talented juniors will also be asked to be more involved with our senior grades to help their cricket development. Previously our coaching staff have not been able to manage this, however with John’s organisation skills and ideas we believe it’s not only possible but required. Juniors will be encouraged to play senior cricket for their development as well.
During the off season we have installed our own turf training wicket for our players to train on. Very few clubs on the Gold Coast have this facility available to them. The club is throwing more time and money into preparing this wicket to ensure again our preparation for game day is 100%. We have in place plans for new net lights as well as other ground improvements. Season 10/11 also will see a new ground added to our roster. A new synthetic wicket block will be completed prior to the start of the season at Flooded Gum Park, Pacific Pines.
The club house is also going through some changes. By the start of the season we will have much larger changing rooms. Our home team’s change room will be air conditioned and will also have its own private outdoor area at the back of the club house. Our club rooms will be almost double the size of the visitors so playing at home will be a major advantage.
We are also looking at changing the bar area to be more social, extending the outdoor areas and further work is planned moving forward!! This season the wheel returns, every Saturday night $50 will be up for grabs if you are in the clubhouse. As you know it will jackpot each week it is not claimed so you need to be at the club Saturday nights to win. Other social events will be introduced as the season kicks off – Stay tuned for those new ideas!!
The committee this year is also well organised with a major new incentive for our members, sponsors and local public to get more involved with our club. This will hopefully bring in new recruits to our growing club, more sponsors and more revenue over the bar. All of which allow you to play cricket each year and keep your fees down. I will be encouraging all of you to be more involved this season as the more money we bring into the club the better facilities and club environment we can create! Something I’m very keen on. Love a beer.
This year also brings in a new Junior Co-Ordinator, Brenda Peace, who will be assisted by Ian Wade-Parker. Their focus will be on Junior enrolment, sponsorship and development. Again, we have already started positive work here and we believe our junior intake for this year will increase greatly. Junior Coaches have already been putting their hands up and we expect even more helpers are to come! All of which will only help strengthen our club environment.
Last year was one of our most successful seasons for many a season. We had more 50s, more 100s, more 5 wickets…more wins…more everything – although this can be seen as individual performances – remember cricket is a team sport. For every stat there is a batter at the other end supporting, there is a fielder making a catch or a run out, for every wicket the entire team putting pressure on the 2 players in the middle to make something happen. This wasn’t from good coaching, this was from each of you wanting to play as a team, gel as a team. Knowing each other’s weaknesses and strengths and supporting each other…as a team. Doing the basics correctly. This is how you win. This is what we want from the playing group this season. The rest will come with a good attitude driven by our better directed coaching, training facilities and a new support team.
I welcome you all back to the Hawks as we embark upon a new cricket season. On behalf of my committee I thank you for your continued support, you are the ones we build the club around. You are the ones that are loyal and are the personalities that every club wants. Those that are there for the club as a whole. We all have differences in personality and backgrounds, but we are all together for one purpose, cricket and getting away from the wife, or well, a few social drinks. Remember this is your club, and with your involvement and commitment, we will grow on and off the field. – I look forward to a huge season for all members and teams playing for the Hawks.
My final message. – This season work towards a goal. Pick something – speak to our coach about it and work out how to achieve it within your cricket. It will make for a much more enjoyable season for you.
President Condor – Out.
